June 16 – 2007

Out of all the low moments in Czech history – including, but not limited to, the time Jaroslav Mitirovsky’s plow got stuck in a manure pit, or the day the National Laptop ran out of batteries – yesterday’s defeat must rank at the top. Watching the match with Lukey was brutal: I’m no Czechophile, but I hate to seem them crushed under the wheels of a technically gifted Turkish side just the same.

Worse, it came on the heels of what proved to be a rough couple of days for the Czech man. His bankroll now stands at a still profitable $119.03, while his national pride clocks in at just under 10 Koruna. Lukey’s picks are below the fold.

DEVASTATED!! After 75 minutes of pure ecstacy, sitting in the hallowed “Cock n’ Bull” in Santa Monica (with the editor in charge), my world came to a screeching halt. First goal – fine. Second goal – utter disappointment and shock. I would have, could have, never imagined watching the world’s best drop a standard cross – not only did he drop it but it just happened to fall to the feet of the Turkish douche. Wow – painful man, fucking painful.

And then less than two minutes later I watched the goal that would ruin my day, my life, my dreams. Maybe it’s a bit dramatic but holy shit did the Czechs ever piss that game away. I’m in a deep rooted depression and plan on staying there until I walk the streets of “Czech town” in Chicago this weekend; at least I’ll be able to drink my sorrows away with some fellow Moravians.

Onwards – we must push on. The Germans were a disappointment in their last game but I don’t see that happening again. They should absolutely smash Austria – Germans win.

Croatia plays Poland knowing they have Turkey in the next game. I think they pull a Portugal, but still think they are good enough for a tie vs. Poland.

Wow, have France ever been a disaster! I have to be honest, I just don’t understand these guys and really they have nothing to play for. I think the Italians pull it out.

The Dutch are on quite a roll, Sneijder looks great, Kuyt is ugly but good, and I think they continue as they cruise by Romania.

Germany vs. Austria
Poland vs. Croatia

Italy vs. France
Holland vs. Romania

I like to poke fun at the Czech man, but the simple truth is this: the guys know how to make money on soccer…which he can then wire to Prague to perpetuate human trafficking schemes involving large breasted Czech women. Lukey is off to a roaring start, with a bankroll that has swelled to the tune of $140.68 – that’s an increase of 40.68%, math wizards.

And did I mention he’s making the pilgrimage out to LA this weekend? He is. Bet against my liver, please.

Ahhh yes, 6 more games, 4 more wins and so I believe my record stands at 8 WINS, 2 losses. Best thing about the last few days? Listening to Tommy Smith try to pronounce the Russian players names. I kept thinking, is this guy calling him a “jerkoff”, “u-off”, “shek-off”, “and-u-cough?” Dude, I’m convinced this guy is retarded (the glasses don’t help).

Second best thing about the last few days? While in Vegas I actually witnessed a “pimped-out” Hyundai Sonata and out walks a guy that looks like Joe Camel, or maybe one of the Turkish National Team players. Seriously though – 19″ wheels, limousine tinted windows, and a fat chick on his side. Perfect!

Back to the games and let me start with those that I could give two shits about: Austria and Poland – I’d rather watch my wife take a crap. Does it matter? Do I want to see it? And will it be pretty? NO, Poland wins this shitfest. And Greece-Russia: seriously, Greece are annoying. They got lucky four years ago, were boring as hell in their first match, and will lose to Russia. Ruskies win!

Portugal and Swiss – just concentrate on making fantastic watches, leave the soccer to the rest of us, Portugal wins.

Now, to the games that matter. Germany looked good- very good- in their first game. Croatia put me to sleep. I can’t see the angry Croats winning this. Germany too much, and you wonder if Croatia could use the “rest of the former Yugoslavia” right about now. Germany win.

Hard not to like Italy; they still threatened often in their loss and if they can score here early the flood gates open. Plus, how much ass must these guys pull? Italy win.

I sure hope Henry plays for the French; these guys looked a bit slow and could use an injection of pace in this game. I’m beginning to dislike the Dutch more and more; light blue socks, wtf is that? I want to call this game a tie, but between the lack of Dutch defending and French scoring…oh, there you go, TIE.

Sweden was also involved in that snoozer of a game with the ugly Greeks and, should they play another snoozer, they get waxed. I’m on Spain: f-off you Swedish socialist douche-rockets…Spain win.

And finally, the game that really matters…Czechs win and they get through, lose and they let in the guy with the Hyundai. Czechs played well against Portugal, dominated large portions of that game, and I believe my fellow countrymen pull through and take care of the Turks. To the 2nd round we go…Czechs win.

Germany v Croatia
Austria v Poland

Italy v Romania
France v Netherlands

Sweden v Spain
Greece v Russia

Turkey v Czech Republic
Portugal v Swiss

And what did Lukey do with the extra cash? He paid for a professional photographer to come to his house and shoot a new head-shot. Oh, the vanity!

So I’m off to a great start, but are you really surprised? I was getting text messages galore on Saturday morning, things such as, “you could use the Slovaks now”…guess what, all I had to say was TASTE IT BITCHES!!! I’m 4-0 after the first weekend and plan on continuing my man-handling of this tournament.

Enough of the self promotion, it’s time for more picks. By the way, are you confused as I am by Julie Foudy and why she’s been allowed to spew her nonsensical idiocy on tv..good lord, and Tommy Smith? This guy must be blind, no penalty on that Austrian tackle? Are you watching the same game as me, IDIOT!?

I’ll be in Vegas for part of the week on work commitments and yes, I do plan on making good on the following bets…don’t be a puss… “clenched fists, my apprentice”.

Interesting set of games coming up, and some tough picks, but that’s why I’m here. I think Italy are going to be tough even without Captain Cannavaro and believe they will continue to play they’re counter-attacking style to perfection. Not really sure what is going on in Holland other than the arrogant Van Basten seems to be pissing everyone off – synergy seems to be off. I like the Italians here, too much talent for the Dutch.

Confused why everyone continues to question the French; if you remember, I backed them in the last World Cup even after a slow start and I will continue to do the same here. Spain, if they play with testicular fortitude should take care of Russia – come on El Nino.

Greece vs. Sweden, who cares…really, who gives a shit…I’ll take Sweden.

Ahhh…yes, Czechs and Portugal…wow, I hate to do this but I’m on Portugal. If the Czechs defend as poorly against Portugal as they did against the Swiss they will get punished – I hope I’m wrong.

Finally the Swiss vs Turkey; could there be a game I care less about? Oh, yes, Austria/Poland. Well, no Frei, no Swiss win…Turkey go on and win this boring-ass game.

Monday:
Romania (4.75) vs. France (1.7) Tie (3.3)
Holland (3.1) vs. Italy (2.3) Tie (2.9)

Tuesday:
Spain vs. Russia:
Greece vs. Sweden:

Wednesday:
Czech Republic vs. Portugal:
Swiss vs. Turkey:

Opening weekend of Euro 2008 and I couldn’t have asked for a better opening match: my CZECHS vs the Swiss. No Rosicky, no Nedved, no Poborsky, NO FUCKING PROBLEM. Listen, we’re playing the Swiss and according to assistant coach Michel Pont their answer to marking Jan Koller is, “We won’t be man-marking Koller.” Are these guys serious? Right, don’t mark a guy that has 54 goals in 87 caps for his country.

Bottom line, too much talent and too much experience in the Czech camp, and not enough brains in the Swiss. Czechs win and Lukey the Czech celebrates with Pilsner Urquell and Arturo Fuente!

As for the rest of the weekend, Portugal (Ronaldo alone) too much for Turkey. Austria could be the worst team in the tournament and proves it against Croatia. And Germany, as one of the favorites, takes care of the slow ass Poles. ENJOY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saturday:

Czechs vs. Swiss : 2-0 Czechs (2.5) Swiss (2.7) Tie (3.0)
Portugal vs. Turkey: 3-0 Portugal (1.7) Turkey (4.8) Tie (3.25)

Sunday:

Austria vs. Croatia: 0-3 Austria (4.0) Croatia (1.85) Tie (3.2)
Germany vs. Poland: 4-1 Germany (1.5) Poland (6.0) Tie (3.6)

Lukey ended last year’s campaign with a staggering $182.63 (based on $5 and $10 mythical wagers). The pilsner and cigar industries absorbed most of that, with any spare change likely finding its way to young ladies “working their way through college.”

Lukey, then, will be off and running from zero. His picks will appear every friday along with odds from Ladbrokes and an update of his progress/ruination. He’ll offer his $10 “Lock of the Week” followed by the $5 fixture run-down and, hopefully, some unsolicited anecdotes about life in America as a first generation Czech man. So, without further ado…

Another EPL season upon us and I’ve managed to convince my wife not to divorce me. Wigan should feel as fortunate for surviving last season’s drop-zone. Was there a more boring team to watch in 2006? I think not. Painful man, painful. An off season of acquisitions worth forgetting, not to mention they dealt their best young player to Everton. I really can’t come up with any good reason to think Wigan have a chance. Everton pound Wigan 3-0.

When an alien race of the future discovers the fossilized remains of Soccernista, they will marvel not at the blatant MLS bashing, the cheap jokes at the expense of Chris Albright, or the epic overuse of the semicolon.  No.  It will be the profit turning ways of our resident Czech national that earns their respect.

Lukey went 10-3 last week, and donkey punched his total winnings to $211.17 (based on $5 and $10 mythical wagers).  Let’s see if he can keep this Gurkha fueled train rolling, after the jump.Â

Lock of the Week

I’m en fuego.  10-3 last week, which followed the previous week’s picks at 7-3. If my math is correct, that makes me 17-6 over my last 23 picks.  Now, if you’ve been following along then you a) have obviously been making money, and b) should not be surprised where I’m going this week with the “lock”.

A good rule to follow when wagering is to stay with what’s been working, whether that be one team, one division, betting on a certain day, etc. For me, I’ve been all over the relegation battle, and I’ve been MONEY!!!! As a side note, I’d just like to make mention that I’ve also skyrocketed in the standings with my premiership fantasy team.

It’s hard to ignore the London battle at White Hart Lane but we’re off to The Valley. The clash between Charlton and Sheff. Utd epitomizes the drama that occurs when you relegate teams at the bottom. You think reality TV has drama? MLS playoffs? The Masters? Forget it!! What you’re in for in this match will be pure, unadulterated drama. Am I saying that these are the two most entertaining sides in the EPL – of course not. BUT, I guarantee that at the end of this game you will see supporters of one side looking like their young child just got eaten by a bear, while the supporters of the other side will be acting as if they just won the lottery.  It’s that intense, it means that much, and it’s drama at it’s finest.

Charlton currently sit in the danger zone but are only two points behind Sheff. Utd, while Wigan and Fulham sit only one point ahead of SheffieldUtd. Charlton has been playing well and only a brilliant strike by James McFadden of Everton in the 91st minute kept them from earning a point at Goodison last week. The Blades pounded West Ham, and then lost to Man U; no surprise on either end. At this point, two main factors swayed my decision to go with Charlton: they are playing at home and they have a guy named Darren Bent.  He’ll be the difference maker. Charlton 3 – Sheff. 2.

Tottenham v Arsenal: 1-3
Bolton v Reading: 2-0
Charlton v Sheff Utd: 3-2
Fulham v Blackburn: 2-1
Liverpool v Wigan: 3-0
Watford v Man City: 0-2
West Ham v Everton: 1-2
Man Utd v Middlesbrough: 3-0

Newcastle v Chelsea: 1-3
Aston Villa v Portsmouth: 2-2

Lukey the Czech was once hit by a flying plate of Nachos while at a US-Mexico game in the late ’90s. I can only assume, then, he was happy with this past week’s result. And a happy Czech, makes for happy picks.

Last week’s matches were fairly uneventful in terms of Lukey’s bankroll, and he now sits at a comfortable $139.64 (based on $5 and $10 mythical wagers). Let’s see if Lukey can channel his nacho revenge satisfaction into some winners, after the jump.

Lock of the Week:

Last week, I once again hit the lock. I’m not sure of my overall record on the “lock of the week,” but I think it’s in the positive. This week, I’m taking a team that at the beginning of the year I didn’t think had a chance to stay up. Decent form as of late and they find themselves 7 pts clear of the relegation zone. On a side note, let me just say you’re safe betting on Chelsea, Man U., and Arsenal this week…but, that’s too easy sooooooooo……

We travel to Bramell Lane for this weeks clash between Sheff. Utd and Tottenham. Spurs are by far the biggest underachievers in the EPL. A roster filled with international players AND a Dutch coach; what else could a fan ask for? Well, let me make a suggestion..how about more than one road win!

Pathetic, disgraceful…one fricking win on the road. Frankly, it’s difficult to predict what you’ll get out of Tottenham on any given day and I’m not liking their odds this week. They travel into a hostile environment against a team that is fighting, and fighting well, each and every week. I do know what to expect out of Sheffield: fight, grit, tackling, hard work, etc. You can have all the skill in the world but without the fight and desire you’ve got nothing. I’ll gladly take the less skilled Warnock warriors…Blades 2 – Primadonnas 1.

Reading v Aston Villa: 1-1
Chelsea v Middlesbrough: 2-0
Everton v Blackburn: 3-1
Man Utd v Charlton: 3-0
Newcastle v Liverpool: 1-2
Sheff Utd v Tottenham: 2-1
West Ham v Watford: 1-0
Portsmouth v Man City: 2-1

Bolton v Fulham: 2-0
Arsenal v Wigan: 3-0

I once watched Lukey the Czech deliberately try to trip a 40 year-old woman during an intramural indoor soccer game. She whirled around and said, “My son is in junior high school, and he has more class than you!“ Lukey, without missing a beat, responded, “Get him out here: I’ll kick his ass too.”

I tell you this only because when you’re looking to make some money, you need a tipster with a heart of stone. No favors, no sentiments: just winners. Lukey’s been fitting the bill of late, and finds himself with a bankroll of $147.93 (based on $5 and $10 mythical wagers). Join him for more ruthless picks, after the jump.

Lock of the Week:

It’s been a couple of weeks since my last round of picks, and I still can’t get over the elation I felt when Liverpool dismantled Chelsea (my lock of the week). It was a beautiful sight: the chosen one sitting helpless on the sideline with players worth millions who could do nothing to counter the Liverpool onslaught. Ahhhh. But we must move forward, just like putting down the Ghurka and picking up your next fine piece of tobacco wrapped heaven.

This week, we’re off to Villa Park. The Hammers are dealing with a slew of injuries, terrible away-form (they have yet to record a win away from home), and some absolutely awful finishing – an astonishing 4 goals scored and 24 conceeded on the road. Newly acquired Matthew Upson will surely look to change this pattern when he makes his debut for the Hammers against his old rivals.

Villa have not been great as of late either, but they do have a winning record at home and have only conceeded 11 goals in 12 home games. Combine that with the Hammers ghastly form and I think the conclusion becomes apparent: The Villians beat up on Wet Spam….3-0!!!!!!

Liverpool v Everton: 2-0
Aston Villa v West Ham: 1-0
Blackburn v Sheff Utd: 2-1
Charlton v Chelsea: 1-3
Fulham v Newcastle: 2-2
Man City v Reading: 1-0
Watford v Bolton: 0-2
Wigan v Portsmouth: 1-1
Middlesbrough v Arsenal: 1-3

Tottenham v Man Utd: 0-2

Let’s see if his picks can get him to the Home Depot Center, after the jump.

Pick of the Week:

Last week we went .500 and got some flack for it. Questions arose about my comments in regards to the bookies as well as “that age old argument over value vs. outcome”. Let’s me just say that, even in hindsight, I’m very happy with my picks. Again, I’m not always concerned about the outcome. In the long run, you’ll make money if you make good picks. For example, I picked Tottenham at home last week against Newcastle. Newcastle won the game but prior to the game there was absolutley NO good reason to bet on Newcastle. They stink on the road, Tottenham hadn’t lost a home game in months, and recent results backed our logic. Follow me here…you’ll make money.

I can’t stay away from Anfield this weekend. Liverpool have been great at home and are on a great run as of late. As for Chelsea, well it’s the same old Chelsea drama. Will Jose stay or go? Is Shevchenko a distraction (I doubt it)? Is his wife (most definitely)?

Liverpool have NOT lost at home and have conceeded only 3 goals: that’s impressive. Chelsea have been solid on the road, but the combination of Essien and Carvalho in the center of defense can’t hold up. Couple that with a missing Claude Makelele and I’m seeing some major holes through the center of the field. Chelsea are starting to remind me of a soap opera I’m more accustomed to seeing in the NBA, and frankly it’s tiring. Liverpool come out firing on all cylinders and the combination of Kuyt, Crouch, and Bellamy give Chelsea fits…2-1!

Liverpool v Chelsea: 2-1
Aston Villa v Watford: 2-0
Fulham v Tottenham: 2-2
Middlesbrough v Bolton: 1-2
Newcastle v West Ham: 3-1
Portsmouth v Charlton: 2-1
Reading v Sheff Utd: 1-0
Man City v Blackburn: 1-1

Wigan v Everton: 0-1
Arsenal v Man Utd: 1-1

Lukey had a holiday dip, but he’s trending upwards. He currently maintains a profit of $142.92 (based on $5 and $10 mythical wagers). His picks are after the jump.

Again, I’m confused by the odds-makers but more than willing to take advantage. According to the lines, Portsmouth is an underdog at Sheffield United….yeah, you read that correctly. Last I checked (1 minute ago) Portsmouth sit 6th in the table while Sheffield find themselves just above the relegation zone. And though Sheffield have had some good results at home recently (1-0 win over Arsenal) they have also had some bad ones such as the loss to Man. City….so at best the results are shifty. Meanwhile, Portsmouth are almost .500 on the road and have scored only one less goal than conceeded. Hulse and Stead or Cole and Kanu? I’m on the latter. Sheffield 0 – Portsmouth 2!!!!

Watford v Liverpool: 0-2
Bolton v Man City: 3-0
Charlton v Middlesbrough: 1-2
Chelsea v Wigan: 3-2
Man Utd v Aston Villa: 2-0
Sheff Utd v Portsmouth: 0-2
West Ham v Fulham: 1-0
Blackburn v Arsenal: 0-1

Everton v Reading: 2-0
Tottenham v Newcastle: 2-1

Happy holidays and a happy new year to all. Yes, the Czech (that’s me, referring to myself in 3rd person) will be ringing in the new year with a fresh stock of polish meats (from the local polish fetzer) and European brews such as Peter’s Brand, Tyskie (Polish brew), and of course Pilsner Urquell. I should also mention that I received some fine cigars during the Christmas gift giving season – I plan on smoking them until my throat hurts. On to more important things such as this weekend’s lineup of EPL matches…

Our friends at Stamford Bridge have been doing nothing of late except dodging serious bullets. They scored a late winner at Goodison a couple weeks ago, followed by another late winner against Wigan and followed that with a tie against Reading. Was anyone else annoyed with watching “the special one” running down the sideline doing the arm pump in celebration??

Well, I’m here to tell you that “the special one’s” luck is going to run out. John Terry is out for a good while and his centerback replacement of late (Boulahrouz) is also out this week, not that it’s a big loss. The injuries are starting to pile up and it’s obviously starting to wear on the regulars.

This week, they are at home against a Fulham side that will be fueled by the return of captain Luis Boa Morte. And although Fulham have only won once on the road, I see them pulling off the upset here. Chelsea is under pressure to stay with Man Utd and it finally catches up with them this week. The captain is injured, the special one flustered, and the 30 million dollar forward on the bench…Chelsea LOSE at home to Fulham…1-2!!!!!!!!
Charlton v Aston Villa: 1-2
Blackburn v Middlesbrough: 2-0
Bolton v Portsmouth: 3-1
Chelsea v Fulham: 1-2
Everton v Newcastle: 1-2
Man Utd v Reading: 2-0
Tottenham v Liverpool: 2-2
Watford v Wigan: 1-0
West Ham v Man City: 2-0
Sheff Utd v Arsenal: 1-3

Hide the Pilsner and lock up your Bavarian daughters: Lukey the Czech is back to his winning ways. After turning in an 8-4 performance last week, Lukey finds his bankroll swelled to the tune of $158.72 (based on $5 and $10 mythical wagers). His latest run, though not approaching his World Cup greatness, is his best since those halcion days of July. See if he has more in the tank, after the jump.

The holidays are here and I’m heating up just in time to make myself some extra X-mas money. Speaking of, have you been to a mall lately? What a fucking disaster. Sometimes I think, “If this is where capitalism leads, maybe we Czechs shouldn’t have been so quick to toss out comrade Gorby.” But then I smoke myself a $12 cigar, and realize that democracy really does bring peace.

Enough of that, did you schmucks (my dad’s favorite word) follow my advice last week…8 wins, 4 losses…not too fucking bad, if I do say so myself. Last week is over and this week is here…so let’s move forward, fuckers. Sorry about the language: one too many Pilsners, a walk through the mall, and spending money on stupid shit makes my stomach churn.

Last week the lock didn’t come in but it was a good bet; Wigan just failed to finish. I’m happy with my picks, regardless of outcome. This week, it’s like picking out of a hat….but, we seek value, friends. Value.

Reading is on a nice run lately, while Blackburn is playing some of the worst football in the EPL; only my golf game looks worse. No beating around the bush here: Blackburn look awful and I just can’t endorse them. More surprising is the fact that Reading is even odds to win the game: bet $10 to win $10. Seems like a steal right? Right!!!

Additionally, I don’t understand the fascination with the Aussies on the Rovers. I think those guys suck. Lucas Neill is one of the dirtiest players around while Brett Emerton is one of the most overrated. They are coming off a loss to Newcastle at home, and now they must travel to a Madjeski Stadium that has proven one of the most difficult places in the Prem for away teams.

I love the uniforms and I’ve been a big fan all year…Reading 3, Posers 1!!!!!!!!

Charlton v Liverpool: 0-2
Arsenal v Portsmouth: 1-0
Newcastle v Watford: 2-1
Reading v Blackburn: 3-1
Wigan v Sheff Utd: 2-0
Aston Villa v Bolton: 2-2

Everton v Chelsea: 1-2
Man City v Tottenham: 1-1
West Ham v Man Utd: 0-2

Fulham v Middlesbrough: 2-1

7-6 might not sound like a great week, but remember: because there are three results (w-l-d) there are twice as many ways to lose when your wagering on soccer. Lukey the Czech’s bankroll received a modest boost off this performance to $131.24 (based on $5 and $10 mythical wagers). Let’s see how the Czech-man handles this weekend’s slate of Prem action, after the jump.

Pick of the Week:

Not a bad last week as I went 7-6. More importantly, my lock of the week came in big time and I also predicted a tie between Villa and Portsmouth that netted a nice dollar amount. But enough of the past, let’s keep moving forward…

This week I’m once again going to pick a road team as my pick of the week. Wigan got pounded last week by Liverpool only to recover a few days later and beat up on the Hammers at Upton Park. This week, Wigan travel to the Riverside to take on an average Middlesbrough team, which also happens to be one of my least favorite EPL teams. At home, Middlesbrough has scored 7 goals while giving up 9. Wigan on the other hand has scored 9 on the road while giving up 10. The kicker, you ask? The odds on Wigan winning are almost 2.5-1. Basically, put down a $10 bet and if you win, you pocket almost $25. I don’t quite understand it – how can Wigan be such an underdog? “Boro” are a painful team to watch – maybe Southgate really does need a coaching license, or maybe he’s just a better player than coach. Either way, they’re piss-poor and look for them to fall even further in the table. I’m predicting they barely survive the year and don’t survive this match with a win….Wigan 2, Borough 1!!!!!!!!!!!

Man Utd v Man City: 2-0
Blackburn v Newcastle: 2-1
Liverpool v Fulham: 3-0
Middlesbrough v Wigan: 1-2
Portsmouth v Everton: 2-0
Tottenham v Charlton: 3-1
Watford v Reading: 1-1
Bolton v West Ham: 2-0

Chelsea v Arsenal: 2-1

Sheff. Utd v Aston Villa: 0-1

Chelsea v Newcastle: 2-0
Wigan v Arsenal: 0-2

Numbers aren’t our bag: we made another mistake on Lukey the Czech’s bankroll last week. In American dollars, the sheet should read $119.54 in profit (based on $5 and $10 mythical wagers). He comes to this country, exploits our open society, capitalist economy, and lax strip club laws, and then pinches pennies. The nerve of this guy.

Lukey’s picks are after the jump.

Pick of the Week:

I thought Watford might get their first win last week, but instead they could only muster a draw against Tottenham. Once again I am prediciting Watford gets their first win, and I see a major upset coming between Sheffield and Newcastle at St. James Part. BUT, neither of these games are my pick of the week. Instead, I’m on the Bolton/Wigan matchup.

Bolton got absolutely throttled at home against ManU last week. This rarely happens as they typically have one of the stingiest defenses, especially at home. This week will be a gut check as they come up against a Wigan team that’s on a recent roll. I can’t be sure of the exact history, but I’m pretty sure Wigan have never won at the Reebok, and after the pounding of last week, the Wanderers will be out to prove themselves. Also, Big Sam is always on the phone and though I’m never sure if he’s “bunging”, betting on horses, or making dinner plans, he always seems to have his team organized. Therefore, I’m with Sam and the boys this week….Bolton 2-0.

Fulham v Everton: 1-2
Charlton v Man City: 2-1
Liverpool v Reading: 2-0
Man Utd v Portsmouth: 1-1
Watford v Middlesbrough: 2-1
Newcastle v Sheff Utd: 1-2

West Ham v Arsenal: 0-2
Aston Villa v Blackburn: 1-1
Tottenham v Chelsea: 0-1

Last week, a miscalculation of Lukey the Czech’s profit set off a firestorm of emails, phone calls, and text-messages…from Lukey the Czech. We’re not ones to stand in the way of a Bavarian and his Koruny, so we now bring you the revised numbers: Lukey is ahead $112.78 (based on $5 and $10 mythical wagers).

Let’s see if he really is back to his winning ways, after the jump.

This might sound funny, but I feel like I’m starting to hit my groove. Last week I picked 6 of the 10 and the prior week I picked 5 (4 was a mistake by the <strike>sackless</strike> fearless leader of this site). And although that’s barely batting .500, anything over that will suffice in leading to a profit.

While playing in the ocean off the coast of Maui this past week, I realized a few things: 1) Liverpool SUCK, they are decent at home and shit on the road, and overall they are shite. 2) Reading work their asses off and I like the coach. Though they may be short on talent – they will stay up. 3) Alan Pardew is potentially the worst manager in the EPL.

Having said all that, I have no choice but to go out on a limb and jump on Watford as my lock of the week. Yes, Watford. Let’s face it, Tottenham have A LOT of talent but they’re one of these teams I can’t seem to get my brain around. I mean, they have a new lineup every week, Martin Jol is a bumbling, excuse making ass, and Jermaine Defoe doesn’t play on a regular basis (is it because he’s a biter?). I just don’t get it, and I’m not sure if the players get it either. Don’t get me wrong, Watford is nothing special and will be lucky to stay up, but they’re at home this weekend and hungry after coming off a win against Hull City in the Carling Cup. Plus, they have to win a game sooner or later and I’m thinking it’s a good weekend against an unpredictable opponent. Of course, they could also get their asses handed to them…but fuck it…Watford 2 – Jolskis 1.

October 20 – 2006

Last week, Lukey the Czech went 4 for 9 while his bankroll slipped below the century mark for the first time since the World Cup. It’s not been a good run for Lukey, but know this: the Czech people are a wily bunch, known to play dead in order to gain an advantage.

Currently, Lukey maintains a profit of $98.25 (based on $5 and $10 mythical bets). This week, he’s looking to an American owned, Irish led club to get him back in the winner’s circle. Giddee up, after the jump.

Lukey’s Lock:

I’ve done quite well with my lock of the week and that didn’t change last Saturday, when not only did I predict the winner, but also hit the score on the nose. The obvious pick would be Everton at home against Shittfield United, but that’s too easy and the value just isn’t there.

Instead I’m jumping on the Martin O’Neill train. I love this guy: I can’t understand him when he speaks in the post match interviews, he looks ultra goofy, and with the specs that he’s sporting, one might assume the guy is legally blind. Nevertheless, he’s taken a team that I thought would be complete shite this year and turned them into a serious contender. They created numerous chances last week, and if it wasn’t for one f’ing terrible forward (Angel) they would have won the game. What’s with Angel? He missed 3 pks last year, missed another this last weekend, proceeded to score an own goal, and missed a chance in the closing seconds to put the game away. Needless to say, I’m tired of watching this jackoff on the field and I think this statement from his team profile puts it all in perspective:

Although he is certainly known to still miss the ODD GLARING CHANCE, the long-haired frontman is now adored at Villa Park and is a true fans’ favourite.

Not exactly what I’d want my favorite team’s forward-profile to look like. Even so, Fulham have given up 9 goals on the road, while Villa’s defense has been nothing short of stellar. Petrov is starting to find his groove, Barry has been great, and hopefully Baros is given a chance…Villians 2 – Fulham 0.

Rest of the Field:

Wigan vs. Man City: 1-1
Charlton vs. Watford: 3-1
Chelsea vs. Portsmouth: 2-0
Everton vs. Sheff. Utd: 3-0
Man Utd. vs. Liverpool: 1-0
Blackburn vs. Bolton: 2-2
Middlesbrough vs. Newcastle: 2-1
Tottenham vs. West Ham: 2-1
Reading vs. Arsenal: 0-1

Last week’s draw between Colorado and New York brought Lukey his 6th consecutive defeat, reducing him to an overall total of $109.25 (based on $5 and $10 mythical wagers). So what do you do when things go pear-shaped? You find someone who’s blowing it even worse than you are, and take advantage of them.

Lukey gives his Prem picks after the jump.

Lukey’s Lock: Portsmouth vs. West Ham

Ever since the sketchy arrival of their Argentine transfers, West Ham have gone to the shits. Portsmouth haven’t exactly gotten the results they’ve wanted lately, but continue to play good football. I love Benjaniand Kanu, and the resurgent Sol Campbell is anchoring a stellar Pompey defense. Though I’ve always been a West Ham appreciator (mostly due to the influence of the late Clive Charles), these aren’t the hammers I’m used to watching. Harewood has been nothing short of a disaster this year, missing more 1v1’s than imaginable and, as mentioned, the Argies have been a huge disappointment. Things don’t get any easier as the Hammers travel to Portsmouth this week where they’ll suffer yet another defeat…2-0.

Rest of the Pack:

Wigan vs. Man Utd.: 1-2
Arsenal vs. Watford: 2-0
Aston Villa vs. Tottenham: 1-0
Liverpool vs. Blackburn: 3-1
Man. City vs. Sheff. Utd: 2-0
Middlesbrough vs. Everton: 1-2
Reading vs. Chelsea: 0-1

Newcastle vs. Bolton: 1-1

Fulham vs. Charlton: 3-2

Fresh off his World Cup run in July, you’ll recall how Lukey the Czech charged headlong into the MLS…only to have the league crap on his head. He went a stunning 4 weeks without posting a positive return, and has yet to record an MLS victory. As of today, he’s back on the MLS horse with $119.25 in the saddle-bag. His pick for the Colorado-New York match is after the jump.

Initially I thought to make some picks for Euro 2008 qualifying, but let?s face it: I think I?ve more than proved my worth on the international scene. A few more reasons why Colorado wins: Clint Mathis is suspended (contrary to popular belief no team needs a lazy burnout roaming the field), Jeff Agoos joins the Red Bulls coaching staff (this can?t be good and I expect NY?s level of play to diminish significantly) Joe Cannon in goal (believe you me, in every big game this guy has played he has what one might call a ?wet dream?), and last but not least, former Rapid, National team defender, and color commentator, Marcelo ?Celo? Remember the halcyon days of the World Cup? Lukey the Czech was as automatic as a US National Team loss. Through 63 games (”Screw you, 3rd place game”) he amassed a massive $213 profit (based on $10 mythical wages). All seemed right with the world, and Soccernista had found its gambling messiah.Fast forward to today. Prospects for peace in the Middle East have stalled, and Lukey the Czech is hemorrhaging losses. His war-chest has shrunk to $124.35 and, last week, the poor guy even resorted to throwing his beloved Arsenal under the bus (to no avail). He’s still far, far ahead. But how long will we have to wait for the second coming? Perhaps until the NFL wraps up in January?

Prem Matches for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

I told you last week: the first mistake “amateurs” make is betting with their hearts instead of their minds. The second mistake gamblers around the world make is betting for their favorite team. Emotion clouds the mind of rational thought, and thus one mistake rolls into two. Last week, I bet against my team (Arsenal) and paid for it dearly. Although I was overcome with joy Sunday morning (not to mention all of Sunday after a 5-0 day on my NFL football picks) I was also distraught over my recent lack of winners. So what should one do?Forget about it. I’m betting on my team this weekend, no emotion involved (proof provided by last weeks pick), just sheer logic.

Arsenal look like they’re finally coming together, and I’m hoping that the insertion of Henry back into the lineup doesn’t make the others go back into a shell and wait for the Frenchman to do something great. They attacked with great enthusiasm last week. Fabregas and Rosicky were wonderful in the midfield while Adebayor was nothing short of brilliant up front. I think they’ve turned the corner, and other teams better take notice. I’m looking for nothing short of a beating against a team that should thank God daily for their presence in the premiership. Gunners clean house….3-0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EDITOR’S NOTE: Lukey’s “mortal lock” pays 1:5 for an Arsenal win. We are watching a Czech man come undone. Let’s pray, for his sake, that Arsenal thump Shitfield United. The guy needs a win.

Rest of the Field:

Liverpool vs. Tottenham: 2-0
Aston Villa vs. Charlton: 1-0
Fulham vs. Chelsea: 0-2
Man City vs. West Ham: 2-2
Middlesbrough vs. Blackburn: 2-2
Wigan vs. Watford: 2-0
Reading vs. Man U: 0-2

Newcastle vs. Everton: 1-2

Portsmouth vs. Bolton: 1-0
