When is the mainstream media going to wake up:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/soccer/06/26/bc.soc.goldcupratings.ap/index.html

During the Stanley Cup, we get extended pieces of analysis from Barry Melrose's hair. During the Gold Cup, we're lucky if there is a highlight. Even MLS games get better ratings than the NHL. It's no doubt a vestige of the time when hockey was a major sport, but those days have come and gone. I guess when I say mainstream media, I mean ESPN, which should devote real coverage to soccer more than once every four years.

BTW, I went to the game on Sunday, and it was one of the best sporting experiences of my life. Great atmosphere, tense, intense, and with a twinge of violence in the air. After the Feilhaber goal, you could just feel the air let out of the Mexican fans. And again, no class in refusing to shake hands/trade shirts with the Americans. Hugo Sanchez's pink shirt looked even better in person.

That's an amazing collection of photos. #18 of 18 is particularly newsworthy.

It's a sad day when an Arsenal fan has to take solace in the US national team (adieu Thierry), but I'm predicting that Feilhaber winds up at PSV. Just a hunch.

Also, I'm kind of baffled by this (marginally sfw, if you can believe it)...
