April 30 - 2007

You can read these while contemplating quitting your job because Sam Allardyce said it was ok.

  • The conjoined scoreline of the Everton-ManU/Bolton-Chelsea games continued my Taoist education: I hate Chelsea so much that I love Manchester United, but really I hate Manchester United, and maybe love and hate are aspects of the same thing, like yin and yang.  At any rate, I was thoroughly amused when Phil Neville forgot which club signs his checks (remember, he’s not the sharpest tool in the drawer).
  • Even as a recovering West Ham fan, my moral compass is tuned to understand that the “fine” for the Tevez transaction represents a gross miscarriage of justice.  $10million?  Icelandic biscuit magnates spend that that much on fermented shark and Brennivin binges alone.  If we can all agree that signing players in murky, third party deals is wrong, can we not all agree that the punishment should actually be punitive?  Paul Jewell is whining, but he’s also right.
  • Attention MLS execs:  Watch this video, and weep for what you have wrought.
  • Usually I’d advise against bidding on a Fecundo Erpen jersey, but when the cause is as good as this one

  1. You get a TON of respect for being a West Ham fan, yet still recognizing how b.s. that fine was! If relegation/staying up was a foregone conclusion, they most certainly would have been handed a points reduction. But the cowards at the FA refused to seal West Ham’s fate, despite the fact that one of the illegally signed players is the only reason that they still have a fighting chance at Premier League football next season. If they stay up at the expense of Fulham, I’m going to go batshit.

  2. It’s Tuesday, which means it’s time for your “Joey Barton Detriment to Society Update!” (from EatSleepSport.com)

Fighting Barton suspended by City Tue, 01 May 2007 17:11
Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton has been suspended until the end of the season after a training ground fight with Ousmane Dabo.
City had released a statement to confirm only that a player has been suspended following a fight between Barton and Dabo at training on Tuesday.
The club’s Head of Communications Paul Tyrrell would only say on the official website: “We can confirm that a player has been suspended until the end of the season, pending an internal investigation into a training incident at the Carrington complex.

“The Club will be making no further comment at this time.”

However they then confirmed within half an hour that Barton is the man who has been disciplined and Dabo required some hospital treatment.

Barton’s career has so far been punctuated with disciplinary problems. His club considered sacking him after an incident at a Christmas party where he poked a cigar in junior player Jamie Tandy’s eye.

The following summer Barton was sent home from a pre-season tournament in Thailand after becoming involved in a fight with a young Everton fan, and also saw an altercation with team-mate Richard Dunne which resulted in Dunne injuring his foot after kicking a wall in anger. These incidents resulted in Barton undergoing anger management therapy at the request of Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce and paying out £120,000 in club fines.

The England-capped player was arrested on suspicion of criminal assault and criminal damage after an alleged argument with a taxi driver in Liverpool, while going to his hotel after a match in March 2007.

  3. 30 minutes in against Bolton, I’m guessing that “fine” might’ve been well worth the price in the eyes of WHUFC management.

Holy goodness, Noble’s strike was pure class!
