In my bid to become the last blogger on the planet to link it, I give you the Lionel Messi goal everyone’s obsessing about…with a twist.
Clearly, the paralells are significant. But allow me to get curmudgeonly for a second here: I think Messi’s looks like a cheap, dime-store version. It lacks a certain je ne sais quoi (ooooh, fancy!). It could be the nostalgia talking, but I’ll take the original any day of the week. Â
I think it’s nostalgia talking.
Maradona just edges Messi out on style points because of the turn at the beginning. However, Messi was moving at a faster clip, and I don’t understand how he keeps the ball so close to him at top speed.
Like I said, it’s Maradona, but not by much.

Maradona hands down! For the love of God, argueably the finest goal in World Cup history. Those white cones aren’t middle shelf, mid-table wankers. It just doesn’t get any better than that.

I think the fact that maradona’s goal is in a World Cup against england after the most contraversial goal in the history of football alone makes it the better goal

To me what makes the difference is that Messi seemed to be making it up as he goes along, and gets lucky skipping past the last defender on the edge of the box.
Maradona never put his head down, and luck never entered into it. He knew what he was doing at every moment.

And Maradona always seems like he might threaten to pass. Messi has that “i hope this is going well” look about him..

I think it’s gotta be Maradona’s physique that makes his goalscoring so unique. I’ve seen very few men so disproportionately “squatty.”
