Footballers Poking at Keys

Not all footballers are writing self-fellatiating autobiographies while barely one-third of the way through their career. Some are writing quality musings for periodicals and interweb publication. When I find the latter, I’ll post ‘em.

  • Moritz Volz is making it increasingly difficult for me not to become a Fulham fan. In his latest article for the London Times, Volz displays a charitable disposition, a penchant for self deprecation, and a rapist rapier wit. And I didn’t even think Germans could be funny.
  • Brian Ching reveals the Dynamo have housed themselves according to distinct cultural indicators. If I am ever, for some apocalyptic purpose, placed on the Dynamo roster, please (please!) put me in the grumpy old men house. (link courtesy DuNord)
  • David James waxes geriatric about his intent to play until he dies on the pitch.

  1. Good finds and enjoyable reads.

I find it funny that Moritz mentioned your boy, Landon, in the article. Conversely, I find it sad that a lot of footie fans know Landon, but wouldn’t know Volz from a Volkswagen.

Having went to junior high and high school with Dynamo captain, Wade Barrett, it’s good to hear he’s grouped in with the ‘Grumpy Old Men’. Drinking coffee and complaining? I LOOOOOVE drinking coffee and complaining!!

Calamity James deciding he’d focus on Ray Clemence’s record of 14 goals while at Liverpool is laughable. How long do you think it took reality to settle in? Maybe after he let in two, maybe three, unexplainable howlers?

  3. The idea of Volz happily seeking a Landon Donovan sticker amuses me to no end. That guy is classic.

  4. Garth, hop on the Fulham bandwagon. You’ll want to follow someone in the EPL next year after West Ham go down, right? If you can ignore the fans who hopped on strictly because of the American influx, you’ll find a club that plays in the most interesting (even I couldn’t bring myself to say “best”) ground in the league. You’ll find fans with a self-deprecating sense of humor, with no racist or hooligan elements. You’ll be on board for a rollercoaster ride of results, where you’ll lose at home to teams destined for the drop, but turn around and beat Chelsea. And most importantly, you’ll be really cool (finally).

  5. Tempting…especially the part about being cool. If Jimmy Bullard makes a comeback, I might be tempted further. But even having this conversation makes me feel like a bastard. Screw me.

  6. I hope the GSE come after you Garth….having such thoughts calls for a serious ass kicking! I guess your wife already does enough of that…
