February 7 - 2007

Yep. That is a hot dog inside a burrito. And what better metaphor for this clash between two neighbors who share so much, yet remain so different.*

*The word “different,” in this case, referring to attitudes of permissiveness towards the “donkey show.”

Early reports out of AZ contain the words, “sell-out crowd,” and I’m fairly excited to see what tonight’s atmosphere will be like. More so, I’m looking forward to seeing what (if anything) the national team has learned since their debacle of last summer.

0 min: No HD. That blows. I can’t tell you how badly I wanted to see Tim Howard’s twitch-fest in rich, high definition.

0 min: And just as I’m making fun of it, we get a heart-strings profile on Howard’s Tourette’s Syndrome. I hope my bedroom in hell has a nice view of the Lake of Fire.

0 min: Dave O’Brien keeps casually referencing the “tensions” in Arizona. I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if he lets some bigotry, thinly veiled or otherwise, slip out at some point this evening.

0 min: The Mexican national anthem is a bit lofty, for my tastes…a little too much pomp and circumstance. Having driven past Ciudad Juarez, I’m not sure a rising crescendo of horns befits a country where a school bus half-buried into a hillside qualifies as a residence. Just saying.

0 min: Being from Oregon, I suppose the same thing could be said about the US national anthem. But the school bus isn’t buried…and it has a meth lab in it.

0 min: “No words, just think.” -Bob Bradley. God how I wish Wynalda would follow that advice.

2 min: Worst. First. 2 minutes. Ever. But the crowd is in nice voice.

4 min: Good combination play from Mexico, and that very nearly could have resulted in a goal. Most countries on Earth continue to look far, far better over the ball than we do.

7 min: Is Marquez wearing Prince’s headband from the half-time show?

10 min: That was a truly fantastic touch out of Donovan. He still looks pretty effete going at defenders, but you have to respect the first touch.

16 min: Clearly the game is being played with a good degree of passion…but these morons with microphones drone on…and on…and on, mostly about personal experiences. Why anyone won’t tell them to shut up is beyond me.

20 min: “He came out of the shower, and asked, ‘What are you guys talking about?’ We said, ‘you.’” Granted I’m blogging this from West Hollywood, but if that’s not a scene lifted from a stud film, I don’t know what is.

24 min: Cris Rolfe gives the ball away cheaply. Again. There’s confidence, and there’s irrational exuberance. His is the latter.

25 min: Unreal piece of ball-watching out of the US there (at the edge of the 18). With a better pass from Blanco, we would have been split wide open.

28 min: The more Arena talks, the more he confirms what I’ve always suspected: he knows not very much about soccer. His observations are all superficial. Rarely does he address the root of any of the US’s tactical inefficiencies. Instead, he just rattles off some symptoms and recommends a bandaid.

30 min: Good run from Bornstein, and…That’s crap, Convey.

35 min: I was willing to give Rolfe and Donovan a fair shake as a forward pairing, but I think it’s obvious: it will be a long time before the US is good enough to play without a true target player. Of course, with Cooper not even an option tonight…

38 min: Absolutely terrible free-kick from Landon. At what point does he lose his spot? Oh yeah; no point…because Nike runs the federation. Forgot about that.

44 min: Donovan pushes it past a defender and side-nets it. I need to make sure I’m not becoming blind with hate towards everything Donovan does. Still, it seemed like even that run and shot was a cop-out. Isn’t it just a bit too easy to shoot near post there? Can’t be sure if I’m thinking straight, or just drunk on the Landon-and-hate coctail.

Halftime: The US has a lot to fix, but I can’t help but think that most of it has to do with the retirement of Claudio Reyna. There really is no American that can put his foot on the ball and make the Mexicans back up. When Claudio was around the ball, there was always the possibility of a seeing-eye through-ball in behind the defense. Clark? Nope. Clint “holla at ya boy” Dempsey? Nice tricks, but no. Mastroeni? No with a soul patch. We’ll need someone like that if we’re to beat serious treams.

Halftime: “Did somebody make the joke last Liveblog that Bradley looks like Peter Weller-RoboCop?” Not bad. Not bad at all.

Halftime: Wynalda backs Eddie Johnson to “make a mark on this game.” Wynalda also owned tons of Enron stock, still thinks the beta max will dominate, and reports annually to Miami Fusion pre-camp.

47 min: I was wrong, Fonseca is playing. The sea-turtle movement just got a huge boost…and I’m suddenly convinced to change my dinner plans.

52 min: Donovan corner…and Conrad heads home. That corner was defended about as well as the US-Mexican border. Great moment for Conrad.

58 min: Dempsey has done fine when over the ball, but really has had very little space to work in. You have to think that, between Rolfe and Donovan lacking the ability to stretch Mexico and Clark and Mastroeni’s inability to hit longballs, the space won’t be arriving anytime soon.

60 min: Donovan wins a free-kick…and geeks it once again. Can’t see him getting another shot at a dead-ball. God willing.

62 min: Flacid effort from Fonseca. Needs to get back on the turtle huevos.

64 min: Johnson on for Rolfe, and unless he scores an own-goal he should be an improvement.

66 min: Chance after chance for Mexico. My wife even noticed that the US needs to “play some frickin ‘D’.” Marry women from small, Oregon logging towns at your own risk.

71 min: Pushing Dempsey closer to the front-runners has allowed for some good moments. Is there any reason not to give Dempsey a shot at Landon’s roll?

73 min: Bocanegra has done well. Plus he’s rocking the Sam Malone hair. Nice.

75 min: Convey had me out of my seat there, and I thought for sure he’d score. Looks tired, pasty white. Get that guy an oxygen tank and some bain de soleil.

79 min: 62,000+ in attendance. At some point, Americans will need to make a point of not allowing US home games to become (insert Latin American country here) home games. Can we get some republican scare-mongers on this?

83 min: And the defensive bicycle kick makes an appearance. Gotta’ love Mexico.

87 min: Your moment of “Glabalization Done Right” brought to you by Mexican beating a drum while wearing a “Pub Champion” Guinness shirt.

90 min: Nothing wrong with that. Outstanding stuff from Donovan. I almost kicked over the television when Donovan looked back, but after seeing the replay I think it may have been a feint on the goalkeeper. Fantastic.

92 min: Oswaldo Sanchez goes for the spear on the goal celebration. I’m shocked that a Mexican goalkeeper would try something like that. Absolutely shocked.

Final Time: 2-0, Gringos. It wasn’t pretty, but the second half brought out some grit from the US. We’ll be back tomoorow to sift through the detritus, but there’s reason to be happy tonight on this side of the border. Thanks to all who joined us in the comments section. Until next time.

  1. I’m at work, rushed through writing my promos, set to ignore the Carolina-Duke game, and ready for a border war.

What? What about Texas-Oklahoma? How the fuck is THAT a border war?

    Comment by Scott — February 7, 2007 @ 10:31 pm

  32. What’s wrong with the pitch on that near touchline in the US half? Why won’t the players stop short and change direction on it instead of doing the ‘cleats on a slippery surface’ about face?

  33. Blanco went down quicker than a cheap whore. A cheap, no-necked whore.

    Comment by CB Corstorphine — February 7, 2007 @ 10:46 pm

  41. Damn… these guys can talk and talk and talk… I guess you can understand why everyone who played with Wynalda hated him and no one picked up their game for Arena…

  42. There was just about 3 seconds of silence… The Three Stooges are slipping. I’m sure there was some inane comment that could’ve filled up that time.

    Comment by DAM — February 7, 2007 @ 10:53 pm

  47. Right..but, they wouldn’t let him go anyway. They gave us the “douche” and Bocanegra

    Comment by LG — February 7, 2007 @ 10:54 pm

  48. He shouldn’t have… Bradley should fly to London and beg him to come back. I spent two weeks in December over there and it seemed like he put one in every game.

  54. I’m pretty sure that will be tie-breaker if we’re knotted up at the end of the jamboree.

    Comment by CB Corstorphine — February 7, 2007 @ 11:00 pm

  55. Wow…Arena is painful. Does he ever watch the EPL? I very much doubt it…

    Comment by LG — February 7, 2007 @ 11:01 pm

  56. Are you talking about his implying that Howard hasn’t played much?

    Comment by CB Corstorphine — February 7, 2007 @ 11:02 pm

  57. Indeed…

    Comment by LG — February 7, 2007 @ 11:02 pm

  58. If 0-0 at half is good for the U.S. isn’t it good for Mexico as well. Doesn’t that make it a total wash? Why I’m trying to make sense of Arena’s babble is probably a better question.

    Comment by CB Corstorphine — February 7, 2007 @ 11:04 pm

  59. Landon Donovan must have incriminating pictures of every single US Soccer executive. No other reasonable explanation exists…

    Comment by LG — February 7, 2007 @ 11:07 pm

    Comment by DAM — February 7, 2007 @ 11:07 pm

  63. I’m not enjoying watching this. Every game we look like we are scared.

  72. Sublime (and by ’sublime’, I mean ‘cement’) touch by Lan-don there…

Looks like one of my ‘hit the ball ten yards on-the-run and hope my superior speed makes it worthwhile’ dribbles.

    Comment by Scott — February 7, 2007 @ 11:12 pm

  73. What happened to Linda Cohn? She must have had some work done because she looks almost attractive…

    Comment by CB Corstorphine — February 7, 2007 @ 11:17 pm

  74. Convey’s crosses were crap. I loved Arena’s philosophy though–”don’t worry about picking anyone out; just keep hitting crosses and eventually someone will run under them.” Brilliant. Especially considering we may get a total of 3 crosses all night.

    Comment by wink — February 7, 2007 @ 11:18 pm

  78. Relatively unsuccessful at the club level, and now has been able to confuse his squad in consecutive games with perplexing tactics and formations which render them next-to-useless.

And I like seeing Neville jump out of the way of that shot.
